Field Hockey

After a tough loss in last season’s first playoff game, the Quince Orchard field hockey team is looking forward to advancing further into the season, coming back stronger than ever.

Five weeks into the season and six total games played as of October 2, the Cougars are currently standing at 4-2.  To start the season off on September 5, the team has battled through adversity, upset in their first two games by Churchill and by Walter Johnson in overtime. However, this has not stopped them from becoming the best they can be, as they continue to work hard each and every day.

After the first two losses, it was a turning point for the Cougars when they dominated against Wheaton, Gaithersburg, and Seneca Valley in three consecutive games, with shutout scores of 7-0, 10-0, and 7-0.

The team consists of returning and new players—ones who have never stepped into the Cougar Dome before—making big contributions to the team’s success as a whole, including freshmen Tess Thorpe and Krista Lagas, who have outstanding skills to make the varsity team during their first year.

Thorpe claims that one of the team’s successes is when “we almost won our first game of the season when we haven’t played much with each other before,” she said.

Returning players include the team captains of this season: senior Lila Moncak, and juniors Hannah Wagner and Kayla Pilloff. (Note: Pilloff is a member of The Prowler.)

They continue to grow strong bonds as the season progresses. Thorpe describes the girls as “so welcoming, nice and super funny,” becoming not only one team, but one family.

With playoffs underway in less than three weeks, Thorpe is “confident that [the] team will succeed” and “if we work hard, then we will [succeed].”

Come cheer on the field hockey team while they are away on Tuesday, October 10, against John F. Kennedy under the lights at 7 PM.
